In
1972, International Health Programs began its long history of training,
consultation and research with a USAID funded contract to assist the Ministries
of Health in Benin, Lesotho and The Gambia in building health and family
planning service delivery capability. As a core function, IHP has operated
a vibrant regional training center in Santa
Cruz, California since 1973.
Having offered courses in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian, and Romanian (through interpreter), IHP has trained over 6,300 individuals. IHP also works with training centers around the world to provide regional and in-country training as requested. Trainings at IHP were originally designed for family planning nurse practitioners and have evolved into a diversified annual training schedule addressing critical and emerging health issues for all levels of health care practitioners.
In our 35 years, we have learned a great deal through active collaborations with numerous public and private organizations as we jointly work to improve health and population human resource development. Currently, our primary collaborators are the University of California, Berkeley; the University of California, San Francisco; local and state health departments; hospitals; as well as Planned Parenthood affiliates and a number of additional non-governmental organizations. At IHP we believe that the appropriate venue for training must include the community.
