Conducted at IHP, Santa Cruz, California, USA in conjunction with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).


This three-week workshop offers participants an opportunity to share resources and strategies with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) faculty. The training includes classroom lectures; observational site visits with various patient populations, models of care and an introduction to HIV medicine and case study discussions. The program combines didactic presentations by faculty and clinicians in HIV/AIDS research and treatment with clinical observation and case-based training using actual clinical cases for discussion, community site visits and practice teaching.

Participants will meet physicians of infectious diseases and AIDS Medicine on clinical practice and quality assurance. Also participants will be introduced to different models of innovative HIV/AIDS programs and policies and they will meet Dr. Mervyn Silverman, former president of American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) who will cover the history of collaboration and leadership.

Performance Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Understand the latest management strategies in HIV antiretroviral use
  • Describe the epidemiology of HIV infection and management strategies
  • Understand and manage common problems in opportunistic infections and other AIDS related issues
  • Understand the importance of gender specific issues and tailor programs toward various vulnerable groups.

Who Should Attend:

This workshop is designed for health care professionals working in HIV prevention and care for governmental and non-governmental organizations. Participants include AIDS project directors, health educators, physicians, nurses, lab technicians responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating AIDS prevention and care programs.
