Conducted at IHP, Santa Cruz, California, USA

The goal of this intensive, participatory course is to provide participants with knowledge and skills to design and implement evaluations of actual sexual and reproductive health (SRH) programs in their organizations and communities. Program evaluation is essential to effective SRH policy, administration, and services and, of course, to project funding and support. This workshop covers fundamental principles and practices of program evaluation, with an emphasis on qualitative approaches and methods of evaluation.

Performance Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain program evaluation and its rationale to colleagues and program stakeholders.
  • Navigate the evaluation process, its challenges and opportunities.
  • Apply current evaluation frameworks that assess program effectiveness and impact. A comparative analysis of evaluation methodologies, such as EvaluLEAD and logic frameworks, allows participants to select evaluation approaches best suited to achieving the quantitative and qualitative needs of their programs.
  • Identify and apply appropriate goals, performance objectives and indicators for monitoring and evaluating the outcomes and results of SRH programs.
  • Utilize qualitative tools and methods for gathering and analyzing program information and data, such as observation, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and case stories. Field practice exercises provide opportunities for participants to develop their competencies in using evaluation tools and methods.
  • Design and produce an evaluation plan for a SRH project or program. Participants are expected to bring an example of an existing or planned program or project to use in developing an evaluation plan.
  • Report to program stakeholders and funders on the activities, results and impact of SRH programs.

Site Visits:

Site visits will be arranged based on the interests and needs of participants in the workshop. Fieldwork and practice will also be incorporated.

Who Should Attend:

This workshop is designed for health care managers and practitioners working in government and non-government and private organizations who are directly responsible for monitoring and evaluating SRH programs and projects.

Based on Enrollment, IHP reserves the right to cancel courses up to three weeks prior to the scheduled start date.
