This workshop is designed for health care professionals who are responsible for implementing quality improvements in their organizations. The focus is on the development, implementation and evaluation of quality management programs. Workshop objectives are addressed through an experiential learning model that combines classroom and field experiences. Participants will have an opportunity to visit leading US health care institutions to dialogue with quality management experts who manage programs. Participants will create an action plan for making organizational quality improvements for their respective programs.

Workshop Objectives:

At the conclusion of this dynamic and interactive workshop, participants will be able to:

Gain insight into the licensing and accreditation standards for health care institutions and health care providers.
Examine various TQM models and their potential adaptations to local circumstances.

Understand how standards are developed and utilized in quality improvement efforts.

Conduct bench marking in the development of strategic initiatives for making organizational improvements.

Develop knowledge and skills in defining, analyzing, and clarifying problem situations.

Develop evidenced based decision making knowledge and skills.

Apply data collection methods including statistical data analysis and display techniques in presenting information to various stakeholders.

Develop evidenced based decision making knowledge and skills.

Examine how clinical pathways are structured and applied in quality improvement programs.
Develop skills in enhancing teamwork among the various groups involved in meeting quality objectives.
Define the resource requirements needed to support TQM systems including personnel, training, equipment and budget.
Establish training and development plans for all personnel involved in TQM activities.
Develop an action plan to implement a TQM initiative that includes vision, goals, objectives, tasks, schedule, resources, information system, budget, measurable outcomes and methods for evaluation.
Dialogue with American colleagues working in similar health professional roles, visit health agencies operating TQM programs and participate in cultural and recreational activities.
